Ive spent the past 10+ years building and breaking computers. Truthfully sites like newegg and such are the best places to get cheap parts but people like me require instant gradification. I cant stand ordering something then everytime I hear the UPS rumbling by I get more excited than a dog chasing a ball.
I used to work for Best Buy, but I have NEVER bought anything there for my computer other than a few games. Never cared for their systems considering they dont have alot of gaming options (from what i've seen). The smaller computer stores can be good sometimes if your just looking for parts. They might trick you into buying used parts but i've walked in for a 512mb stick of RAM before and ended up with a 1gb in my bag since the lady working that day didnt know how to read the fine print.
I've always built my own systems from scratch. The most important thing was case selection. Your gonna want something durable, made by a big name brand (cause they usually know whats up) and was made for upgrades in the future. Also as i've come to learn from experience, LED lights get annoying after awhile. Also make sure your getting enough fans to fill up any open cooling slots, and yet again, stick with a decent brand since the cheap ones get loud.
Its really up to you on what you want inside your computer, but i've always been AMD>>>Intel for any computers i've built for myself. Building a computer truthfully isnt that hard (i'm finally going to school for it so I can make good money for doing it) but like the previous post said "make sure you get the right stuff". Nothing is more annoying than having to run back to the store because you forgot to get a power cord for that nice new SATA hard drive you just got.
NEVER NEVER NEVER use the service department to put your system together for you. I dont need some so called "Agent" in a sweat soaked white shirt and tie to charge me $65 to "install" my hard drive (aka hook 2 cables up). I'll refrain from going into more detail on the computer buying and building subject since i'll prolly take it too far and go into mouse pad selection or something off the wall. As a last note, if your going to go crazy and make your computer case out of a mop bucket like my friend did, make sure you put a nice cover on it so that you dont spill a bottle of mountain dew in it like he did....
